What does it mean to be be yourself? It simply means to be original. Be authentic. Don’t try to change who you are. Likely, you may never fit what others want you to be. We all have our unique calling. We all have a place on this earth that no one else can fill.
Not happy with yourself? You can change into what you desire to be. Most of us had very little choice in much of what happened to us as a child. As we grow up we do. The simple fact is we are right now, just where we chose to be.
There is only one you. No one else laughs like you. Talks, walks, or thinks exactly like you. You have you own set of tastes. Your own likes and dislikes. In short there is only one authentic you, so why not learn how to be yourself? Why would you desire to be someone else or even be like someone else?
“To wish you were someone else is to waste the person you are.” -- unknown
There is no movie star or author who is like you. You have your own special purpose in life. You may not know what it is, yet. Perhaps no one ever mentioned these things to you, before now. The question is what will you do about this, now that you know you are different? Will you try to use your differences to do or be something special?
“You have a calling which exists only for you and which only you can fulfill.” -- Dr. Naomi Stephan
Is there a passion you desire to follow? Have you been afraid of failing? To be authentic you must get past this fear. You know that fear is usually an illusion. Learning how to be yourself will cause you to stop pretending or wishing you were someone else.
How to be Yourself if You’re Not Happy With You
Face it, you’re stuck with you, but you can make positive changes. If you have habits or quirks you would like to get rid of, there are a couple ways to change. You can use positive self talk to make changes. You can also put some positive self talk to work with our list of affirmations.
“Commit to CANI! -- Constant And Never-ending Improvement.” -- Anthony Robbins, author and speaker
We all should be seeing some constant progress in our lives. Sometimes it won’t be apparent until you stop and glance back at where you were, as compared to where you are now.
Your School Was Wrong
Our schools in America train us to conform. Since the early 1900’s our schools have been run by the government. As big business and government became intertwined the schools began to shape us to be good little employees. Thinking out of the box was discouraged.
“As the twentieth century progressed, and particularly after WWII, schools evolved into behavioral training centers, laboratories of experimentation in the interests of corporations and the government.” -- Johnny Taylor Gatto, former teacher of the year in N.Y. City and State
Your being yourself was not part of their plan. Your school may have told your parents, you had a discipline problem or you weren’t a good learner, but I say you weren’t meant to be a one size fits all puzzle piece. We were all made to be an authentic one of a kind puzzle piece.
Yes we are meant to be part of a bigger puzzle. One of my favorite Christmas films is It’s a wonderful life. In the film George Baily wishes he were someone else until he’s shown what an impact his loss would be to his small hometown. We all have a special place that no one else can take.
“Men are anxious to improve their circumstances, but are unwilling to improve themselves; they therefore remain bound.”-- James Allen
What Being Yourself is Not
Being yourself does not mean you should stay the same and never change. We should all see slight improvements in ourselves on a regular basis. There is no standing still. We are either growing or decaying. Life is not static.
“The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own. No apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on, or blame. The gift is yours - it is an amazing journey - and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.” -- Bob Moawad
Anyone can begin to change their life for the better. Being yourself should be about retaining your originality, your uniqueness, and all your positive traits. Being yourself is not about keeping the unsavory parts of your life.
We were all made to be different. Imagine how dull the world would be without enthusiastic, happy, different people. Were we all conformed to some mold that a government bureaucrat designed, life would be blase. Be yourself and make the world a special place.
Be Yourself With Self Confidence
Self confidence doesn’t come easy for some people. Your self confidence will build with every success you experience. There are many young people who may have been a little repressed, because they had really strong parents. Some parents are afraid to let you be yourself. This was a protective measure on the part of your parent. They may have meant well. Yet, every child needs to be free to be an adult sooner or later.
“Don’t be afraid of being unique. It’s like being afraid of your best self.” -- Donald Trump, Entrepreneur, Businessman and Author
As an adult you are free to start being yourself. Now that we are free from parents or teachers telling us what to do, we must take care not to go to far astray. The world can take us down some dark pathways if we fall in with the wrong people.
Don't be afraid to give your best to small jobs. Every time you conquer one it makes you that much stronger. If you do the little jobs well, the big ones will take care of themselves. -- Dale Carnegie
I would suggest to every young person that they stretch for a higher way of life. Perhaps take a Dale Carnegie class to develop more self confidence. Find a way to be around people who are doing good things with their lives.
“I CAN is 100 times more important than IQ” -- unknown
Did you have a coach or a friend who believed in you? if so you were blessed. The encouragers of life are a sweet group of people. Life has far too few people who will tell you that you can do things. It is more common to have people tell you that you can’t.
Be Yourself Without Limitations
Being yourself, means to be aware there are no limits to your potential on this earth. Usually the limits in our lives are there because we believed a limit someone tried to place in our life by telling us we were too tall, to short, too fat, too skinny, too dumb, or something they weren’t qualified to judge about us.
“Do just once what others say you can't do, and you will never pay attention to their limitations again.” -- James R. Cook
Part of your learning to be yourself is in experiencing some success in your life. If you’re lucky enough, you have a special cheerleader in your life to applaud each small success. If not, don’t be afraid to give yourself a pat on the back once in a while. Just don’t break your arm doing it.
Life is a journey. We’ll all have our up days and down days. Don’t beat yourself up when you have a bad day. Here is my best advice to be given on how to be yourself. It is one of my favorite quotes on being authentic:
“To thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man.” -- William Shakespeare
