Are There Any Recession Proof Jobs?

Today, with the waves of layoffs and the uncertain times, many are looking for recession proof jobs. What are the recession proof careers? What are the best jobs in a recession?

Is there a career that is really recession proof. The short answer is that no job is 100% layoff proof. Companies make mistakes. Anyone can lose a job for any number of reasons.

Magic Power Coffee - You never had coffee like this before!

Certainly we’re in a tough time. Our government is making problems worse by spending money they don’t have. Everyone who has a job desires to be in one of the recession proof jobs.

“It hasn't ended. That was only the beginning. We are going to see a lot more. There is no recovery, it's a cover-up. They're covering it up with stimulus packages, with buy outs, with bailouts – it’s not going to fix the problem.” -- Gerald Celente, Trends Institute speaking on the current economic depression

No one can predict what can cause a job loss. Companies can close for any number of reasons. There are some jobs that usually tend to be more secure due to being in a current trend. One trend today is the large numbers of baby boomers retiring and getting older. Jobs that take advantage of these trends tend to be recession proof jobs.

Any industry or company could have layoffs as their share of the market changes. No job is 100% secure. Even those of us who think we have a secure job are liable to say I got fired at some point in our life

“Recession is when a neighbor loses his job. Depression is when you lose yours.” -- Ronald Reagan, 40th President of the USA

Top recession proof jobs alphabetically would include:

Accountants - With the anticipated tax increases and increasing revenue collection efforts, accounting jobs will stay in demand.

Alcohol and Bars - Much as I may personally dislike it, alcohol consumption and bar patronage actually goes up in bad times as people seek escape from reality. Those working in this industry may have steady employment.

Auto Repair - People are putting off buying a new cars. They’ll still need their cars. Repairing an older car my be preferable to ongoing car payments. Honest and competent auto repairmen are a necessity and busy.

Civil Service - With the current growth in government these jobs are not effected as much by the recession. Be warned that if government income slips even some of these formerly secure jobs could be at risk.

Clergy - In hard times more people turn to God for answers. Growing churches need more committed workers.

Cosmetics - Cosmetics will be an area that women will continue to spend on. Likely cosmetic sales will rise even as bigger ticket items fall. Direct sales companies will benefit.

Energy - Energy production is a huge priority for the future. Green and alternative energy production will continue to grow. Any field that offers energy savings is a growth area.

Food - Retail food sales and Food production will be steady. Restaurants offering good value will grow but poor operators will fail.

Funeral Industry - Death and taxes are certainties. Trends are towards less expensive arrangements. Cremations are a growing part of the funeral industry.

Healthcare - Competent professionals or skilled healthcare workers will be in demand. Especially with our growing eldery population. Personal and Home Health Care are the fastest growing areas of healthcare.

Another area that may be recession proof is to be a supplier or employee of a distributor of the essential health care products.

Information Technology - IT and computer jobs are safer than print advertising. There is a shift to internet and away from newspapers. It is a wired world. There will be layoffs as larger companies cut costs or close down.

Military - Military careers will remain somewhat steady due to world unrest. Military personnel may incur more risk of personal injury due to unrest and terrorism. Unfortunately our military men have become pawns in the quest for world control.

Personal Care - Some people will extend the time between haircuts or have it cut at home. The majority of people will continue to visit the salon, but consumers are now more price conscious.

Public Safety - Police and fire will be steady. Police departments in major cities may increase slightly if the economic downturns cause increased crime and unrest.

Real Estate - Real Estate took at hit as the bubble burst but banks and homeowners still need to move property. For those specializing in foreclosures and short sales, now is a boom time. Many realtors have already left the business.

Retail - As a whole a field with job cuts and layoffs. Jobs will be steady working for companies like Wal-Mart who offer good value. Consumers are looking for value and skipping the unneeded items today. People will spend money on things they want.

Sales - All industries need salespeople. These jobs may be evolving to more in house, and less road sales due to energy costs.

Skilled Service Industries - Plumbers, Electricians, Heating and Air conditioning service and repair will always be needed. We might put off a haircut for a month or cut it at home but when a toilet overflows you can be sure a plumber will be called. Those with good in demand skills are usually in recession proof jobs.

Teachers - Teachers will always be in demand especially in specialized areas. Trade and technical schools may see a surge as people retrain for better careers. Shifting demographics due to population shifts could necessitate a change in location for some teaching jobs. County and State Funding shortages will cause temporary reductions in teaching staff and non-essential positions. Utilities - People will continue to need lights, water and gas. They will still need their garbage hauled. Reductions could happen if there are population shifts from an area. Utility work is one of the recession proof jobs.

Wellness - Alternative wellness is growing due to people’s frustration with traditional medicine’s drug therapy approach. People want cures not just treatments. “You can no longer just pick a job and keep it for the rest of your life.” -- Paul Zane Pilzer, Nobel Prize winning Economist and author

No job or industry is immune to layoffs. While many of these industries have recession proof jobs, in a recession, anyone can lose a job. Keep plugged into your network in case of a sudden need to transition.

“The biggest mistake that you can make is to believe that you are working for somebody else. Job security is gone. The driving force of a career must come from the individual. Remember: Jobs are owned by the company, you own your career!” -- Earl Nightingale, Author and Motivational Speaker

The best way to make yourself layoff proof is to work like it’s your own business. In most jobs management knows who’s giving it their all and who’s slacking. Slackers are unneeded in any economy.

“Unemployment is rising. Every business in the world, big or small is trying to reduce overhead. One of the quickest and easiest ways to do this is to reduce payroll liabilities by laying off employees.” -- Robert Kiyosaki, from book Conspiracy of the Rich

During times of job losses and layoffs, many do consider starting a home based business. Here again the recession is top of mind. Is there a recession proof business? The attraction is the additional income, low start up costs, and the low risk, they afford.

I myself have worked jobs, owned small businesses, and started home businesses. My home business has been the most consistent due to the residual income it pays. I still get paid today, for work I started doing 12 years ago. Rather than depend on a job in these recessionary times, I am building a home business instead. What happens when you can’t find a job. Do you just give up? Nope. See my article on when you can’t find a job.
